How to Backflush Espresso Machine

Backflushing forces water backwards through the group head and out the group's discharge valve, carrying old coffee oils out to the drip tray instead of leaving them to bake on inside your machine. You do a quick water-only backflush every few days, and a detergent backflush about once a month — or every kilo of beans, whichever comes first — for regular home use. It only works on machines that can release the group pressure — an E61 group (which does it mechanically) or a machine with a three-way solenoid valve — which covers most E61 and prosumer group heads; a lot of single-boiler and entry machines can't be backflushed at all.

It is the single most-skipped maintenance job we see at the workshop, and it's also the one people most often get wrong in a way that creates work. This guide covers what backflushing actually does, which machines can and can't be backflushed, exactly how to do it step by step, how often, and the mistakes that turn a five-minute clean into a service bill — including the one that stiffens up your E61 lever.

What is backflushing, and why do it?

Every shot you pull leaves a little coffee oil behind. It collects in the group head, on the dispersion (shower) screen, around the group seal, and inside the discharge valve that releases group pressure at the end of a shot — a three-way solenoid, or on an E61 the group's own mechanical exhaust valve. Left there, those oils go rancid. That's what makes an otherwise clean machine start pulling bitter, ashy-tasting shots no amount of fresh coffee will fix.

Backflushing clears them out. With a blank basket in the portafilter, water has nowhere to go forward, so when the pump builds pressure the water is pushed back through the shower screen and out the discharge valve, flushing the oils and grounds out to waste. A water-only backflush knocks the loose stuff out; a detergent backflush every so often lifts the baked-on oil film that water alone leaves behind.

Skip it for long enough and the oils don't just taste bad — they gum up the discharge valve so it drips or sticks, and they harden on the screen. Both are workshop jobs once they get bad enough. Five minutes with a blank basket keeps you well clear of that.

Which machines can be backflushed?

This is the part generic guides skip, and it matters, because backflushing a machine that isn't built for it does nothing at best and causes damage at worst.

You need a way for the trapped water to escape — and two designs give it one. The first is an E61 group head: when the lever drops, the cam and plungers open the group's own exhaust valve mechanically and dump the pressure back to the drip tray — no solenoid involved. That's how the E61 machines from Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Lelit, Profitec, Quick Mill and Vibiemme handle it. The second is a three-way solenoid valve, which does the same job electrically on most other prosumer heat-exchanger and dual-boiler groups. If your machine has an E61 group or a three-way solenoid, it's designed to be backflushed.

Many single-boiler and entry-level machines have neither an E61 group nor a three-way solenoid. On those, the pressure has nowhere to release, so backflushing with a blank basket does nothing useful and can strain the pump or push water back where it shouldn't go. If your machine dribbles from the group for a second or two after you switch a shot off, that's the discharge valve releasing — a good sign it can be backflushed. If you're not sure, check the manufacturer's cleaning instructions or ask us before you try. If the maker's manual doesn't mention backflushing, assume it can't be done.

What you need: a blank basket and detergent

Two things, and one warning.

  • A blank (blind) basket — a filter basket with no holes, so no water can pass forward. Most prosumer machines come with one; if not, they're an inexpensive part matched to your basket size.
  • Espresso-machine cleaning detergent — a proper cafe-grade group cleaner made to break down coffee oils. A small measure in the blank basket is all you need. Our espresso machine cleaning products guide covers which detergent to buy and how it differs from a descaler.

The warning: never use descaler to backflush. Descaler is an acid made for mineral scale in the boiler and water path — run it back through the group and it attacks the group seal and brew-path parts. Descaling and backflushing are different jobs with different products, covered in the descaling guide. Backflushing uses detergent; never the two mixed up.

How to backflush an espresso machine — step by step

Work through it in order. The rinse at the end is the step people cut short, and it's the one that matters most.

  1. Fit the blank basket. Drop the blank (blind) basket into your portafilter and lock it into the group, just as you would for a normal shot.
  2. Do a water-only backflush first. With no detergent yet, run the group for about five to ten seconds so pressure builds against the blank basket, then stop and let it release. Repeat five or so times. This loosens the bulk of the oils and grounds before the detergent goes anywhere near.
  3. Add a small measure of detergent. Tip the dose stated on your cleaner's label into the blank basket. Don't overdo it — more detergent doesn't clean better, it just takes longer to rinse out.
  4. Run the group in short cycles. Run it for about five seconds, stop, let the pressure release, and repeat several times. You'll often see the water coming out darker as the oils lift. This is the detergent doing its work through the group and out the discharge valve.
  5. Remove the basket and rinse it. Take the portafilter out, tip the dirty water, and rinse the blank basket clean under the tap.
  6. Flush all the detergent out with plain water. Put the rinsed blank basket back in and run five or six more water-only backflushes to clear every trace of detergent from the group. This is the step to be thorough on — leftover detergent tastes soapy and, over time, isn't kind to the group seal.
  7. Purge to waste. Take the blank basket out, put a normal basket in, and run water through the group for a few seconds — or pull one shot and tip it out — as a final check the water runs clean before your next coffee.

How often should you backflush?

For a home machine, keep it simple:

  • Water-only backflush: every few days. A quick blank-basket flush a couple of times a week keeps the oils from ever getting a foothold.
  • Detergent backflush: about once a month, or every kilo of beans — whichever comes first. That's the right ceiling for regular home use.
  • Busy cafes go harder — a water flush most days and a detergent backflush weekly — because they're pulling far more shots.
  • Oily dark-roast beans or a lot of milk work leave more residue, so lean toward the more-frequent end.

One important caveat: don't over-do the detergent backflush. More often is not better here. Backflushing with detergent far more than you need to is one of the mistakes below — it's what dries out and stiffens an E61 lever.

Backflushing mistakes that cost you a service

Most backflushing problems we see on the bench come down to a handful of avoidable mistakes:

  • Over-dosing the detergent. A heavy dose doesn't clean better; it just leaves more to rinse out, and more chance of soapy-tasting shots afterwards.
  • Skipping the rinse. Leftover detergent tastes off and, over time, degrades the group seal. Always finish with five or six plain-water backflushes.
  • Backflushing a machine that isn't built for it. On a single-boiler or entry machine with neither an E61 group nor a three-way solenoid, there's nothing to flush and you can strain the pump. Check first.
  • Ignoring a worn group seal. If water leaks past the portafilter during a backflush, the group gasket is due for replacement — a routine part, but don't backflush around it.
  • Backflushing with detergent too often. This is the one people don't expect. Frequent detergent backflushing — and the heat and moisture that come with it — gradually washes the food-safe grease out of the E61 cam, the mechanism the lever pivots on. Once it dries out, the lever goes stiff and squeaky and the cam wears faster. The fix is a re-lube with food-safe grease, a quick workshop job — but it's exactly why monthly (or per-kilo) is the ceiling for home use, not something to do every day.
