Backflushing forces water backwards through the group head and out the group's discharge valve, carrying old coffee oils out to the drip tray instead of leaving them to bake on inside your machine. You do a quick water-only backflush every few days, and a detergent backflush about once a month — or every kilo of beans, whichever comes first — for regular home use. It only works on machines that can release the group pressure — an E61 group (which does it mechanically) or a machine with a three-way solenoid valve — which covers most E61 and prosumer group heads; a lot of single-boiler and entry machines can't be backflushed at all.
It is the single most-skipped maintenance job we see at the workshop, and it's also the one people most often get wrong in a way that creates work. This guide covers what backflushing actually does, which machines can and can't be backflushed, exactly how to do it step by step, how often, and the mistakes that turn a five-minute clean into a service bill — including the one that stiffens up your E61 lever.
Every shot you pull leaves a little coffee oil behind. It collects in the group head, on the dispersion (shower) screen, around the group seal, and inside the discharge valve that releases group pressure at the end of a shot — a three-way solenoid, or on an E61 the group's own mechanical exhaust valve. Left there, those oils go rancid. That's what makes an otherwise clean machine start pulling bitter, ashy-tasting shots no amount of fresh coffee will fix.
Backflushing clears them out. With a blank basket in the portafilter, water has nowhere to go forward, so when the pump builds pressure the water is pushed back through the shower screen and out the discharge valve, flushing the oils and grounds out to waste. A water-only backflush knocks the loose stuff out; a detergent backflush every so often lifts the baked-on oil film that water alone leaves behind.
Skip it for long enough and the oils don't just taste bad — they gum up the discharge valve so it drips or sticks, and they harden on the screen. Both are workshop jobs once they get bad enough. Five minutes with a blank basket keeps you well clear of that.
This is the part generic guides skip, and it matters, because backflushing a machine that isn't built for it does nothing at best and causes damage at worst.
You need a way for the trapped water to escape — and two designs give it one. The first is an E61 group head: when the lever drops, the cam and plungers open the group's own exhaust valve mechanically and dump the pressure back to the drip tray — no solenoid involved. That's how the E61 machines from Bezzera, Rocket, ECM, Lelit, Profitec, Quick Mill and Vibiemme handle it. The second is a three-way solenoid valve, which does the same job electrically on most other prosumer heat-exchanger and dual-boiler groups. If your machine has an E61 group or a three-way solenoid, it's designed to be backflushed.
Many single-boiler and entry-level machines have neither an E61 group nor a three-way solenoid. On those, the pressure has nowhere to release, so backflushing with a blank basket does nothing useful and can strain the pump or push water back where it shouldn't go. If your machine dribbles from the group for a second or two after you switch a shot off, that's the discharge valve releasing — a good sign it can be backflushed. If you're not sure, check the manufacturer's cleaning instructions or ask us before you try. If the maker's manual doesn't mention backflushing, assume it can't be done.
Two things, and one warning.
The warning: never use descaler to backflush. Descaler is an acid made for mineral scale in the boiler and water path — run it back through the group and it attacks the group seal and brew-path parts. Descaling and backflushing are different jobs with different products, covered in the descaling guide. Backflushing uses detergent; never the two mixed up.
Work through it in order. The rinse at the end is the step people cut short, and it's the one that matters most.

One important caveat: don't over-do the detergent backflush. More often is not better here. Backflushing with detergent far more than you need to is one of the mistakes below — it's what dries out and stiffens an E61 lever.

Once it dries out, the lever feels stiff and can squeak. Ease back to a monthly (or per-kilo) detergent schedule, and get the cam re-lubed with food-safe grease — a quick workshop job that brings the smooth action back.
