Tampers

Consistent tamping is one of the most important — and most overlooked — steps in pulling great espresso. A good coffee tamper that fits your portafilter basket precisely helps you press an even, level puck so water flows through uniformly, giving you a balanced, repeatable shot every time.

Our range of coffee tampers covers the common portafilter sizes — 53mm, 54mm, 57mm and 58mm — in flat and convex base profiles, with stainless steel, aluminium and premium wood-handled options. A 58mm coffee tamper suits most prosumer E61 machines; check your basket’s internal diameter before choosing. Calibrated (spring-loaded) tampers are ideal for beginners: they click at the right pressure so you get a consistent tamp without guesswork.

For experienced baristas, the Pesado and Normcore coffee tampers are perennial favourites for their weight, balance and precision-machined bases. A self-levelling or calibrated tamper takes the variability out of pressure, while a classic flat base gives you full control. Pair your tamper with a quality portafilter for a complete group-head upgrade.

Browse our full range of coffee machine accessories — from knock bins to milk jugs. All coffee tampers are available online with Australia-wide delivery, or visit our Woolloongabba showroom in Brisbane to feel the weight and fit before you buy.

For an even, level puck, pair your tamper with our coffee distributors (WDT and levelling tools) and a stable tamping station.

Coffee tamper FAQs

Is a coffee tamper worth it?

Yes — a dedicated coffee tamper is one of the cheapest upgrades that noticeably improves your espresso. A tamper sized to your basket presses a level, even puck, which is essential for uniform extraction. The flimsy plastic tamper that ships with most machines rarely fits properly and makes consistency much harder.

What is considered the best coffee tamper?

The best coffee tamper is one that matches your portafilter basket exactly (a 58mm tamper for most prosumer machines) with a base profile you like — flat for control, convex for edge coverage. Precision-machined tampers from brands like Pesado and Normcore are popular for their weight and fit; calibrated models add a click at a set pressure for repeatability.

Should I tamp as hard as possible?

No. Once the puck is compressed, extra force adds little and can cause strain over time. Aim for firm, level and consistent rather than maximum pressure — around 15–20kg is plenty. A calibrated or spring-loaded coffee tamper removes the guesswork by clicking when you reach the set pressure.

What is the point of a coffee tamper?

A coffee tamper compresses the ground coffee in the portafilter into a flat, even puck. This removes air gaps and creates uniform resistance so pressurised water extracts the coffee evenly, rather than channelling through weak spots — which is what gives you a balanced espresso.
