At our prices these two sit fifty dollars apart — the Rancilio Silvia V6 at $1,449 and the Lelit Anna PL41TEMD at $1,399 — so price decides nothing here. What separates them is what each brand chose to spend the money on. The Anna gives you factory PID — a precise, repeatable temperature to start every shot from — in a light, compact machine that heats fast. The Silvia gives you a genuine 58 mm commercial group head and nearly double the metal, but no PID at all.
That’s the whole decision, and it doesn’t have a single right answer. We sell and service both as an authorised stockist and service agent, and we send customers home with each of them every month. What follows is the comparison we actually give people standing in the Woolloongabba showroom deciding between the two — specs verified against our own product pages, prices in Australian dollars, and no pretending one of these machines beats the other outright.

Note how close the footprints are — within 5 mm on every dimension. The difference you feel is entirely in the weight.
This is the single biggest functional difference between the two machines, and it’s worth understanding properly rather than treating “has PID” as a tick in a box.
A traditional single boiler runs on a thermostat: it heats to a cut-off, switches off, drifts down, and switches back on. Brew temperature is therefore a moving target — the same grind, dose and timing can give you a noticeably different shot depending on where in that cycle you started. A PID controller replaces that swing with a set point, pulsing the element to hold the boiler in a tight band instead of letting it wander.
The Anna PL41TEMD has this from the factory. That’s what the TEMD in the model code means, and it’s the reason we specify it carefully — the base Anna models sold elsewhere as PL41 or PL41EM have no PID at all. If you’re comparing prices online and find an Anna for considerably less, check the model code first. You’re almost certainly looking at the non-PID version.
But be clear about what PID buys you on a boiler this small. It gives you a precise, repeatable starting temperature and a display showing exactly where the machine is. It does not hold that temperature through the shot. The moment you start extracting, cold water from the tank enters a 0.25 L boiler and mixes with the hot water already there — brew temperature falls during the shot regardless of what the controller wants. What PID does is bring the element back on sooner, narrowing the spread rather than eliminating it. Single-boiler PID sold as precise temperature control throughout extraction is overselling it; that’s dual-boiler territory. That’s still a real advantage, and it’s the honest reason to choose the Anna: starting from the same known number every time is most of what shot-to-shot consistency means at home.
The Silvia has no PID, and Rancilio has never fitted one to the standard machine. Silvia owners instead learn “temperature surfing” — watching the heating light and timing the shot to land in a consistent part of the swing. It’s a real skill, learnable in a fortnight, and thousands of people make excellent espresso this way. But it’s something you do every time, forever.
The obvious question is whether you can just add PID to a Silvia. We generally steer people away from it. A retrofit means cutting into a machine whose greatest strength is its simplicity — that simplicity is exactly what makes it repairable in fifteen years’ time, and a third-party controller complicates every future service visit. Our position is straightforward: if factory temperature control is what you want at this price, the Anna already has it for $50 less. If you want PID and genuinely more capability, step up to the Rancilio Silvia Pro X at around $3,200, which has dual boilers and dual PID built in properly. Talk to us before modifying a Silvia.
The Silvia uses a genuine 58 mm commercial group and portafilter. The Anna uses Lelit’s own 57 mm LELIT57 group. One millimetre sounds like nothing, and in terms of the espresso itself it more or less is — neither size makes better coffee.
What it changes is the ecosystem around the machine. 58 mm is the global commercial standard, so every precision basket, tamper, distribution tool, bottomless portafilter and WDT tool is made for it first. If you want to try a VST or IMS basket, a levelling distributor or a nicer wooden-handled portafilter, it’s all there and it’s all cheap, because the commercial trade buys it in volume.
The Anna’s 57 mm group narrows that pool considerably. Lelit makes good accessories for it and there are third-party options, but you’re choosing from a shortlist rather than a catalogue, and prices tend to be higher for the equivalent item. There’s a second cost too: nothing you buy for a 57 mm machine carries across if you later move up to a 58 mm one, and most of the prosumer market above this tier is 58 mm.
None of this is a reason to reject the Anna. If you’re happy with the basket and tamper in the box and you don’t intend to go down the accessory rabbit hole, the group size will never bother you. But if you already know you’re the kind of person who’ll be buying a bottomless portafilter within six months, that’s a genuine point for the Silvia. 14 kg against 7.5 kg. The Silvia is very nearly double the weight of the Anna in almost exactly the same footprint, and that mass is doing something.
Thermal mass is stored heat. A heavier group head and a heavier chassis take longer to reach temperature, but once they’re there they resist change — the metal buffers the machine against the cooling effect of water passing through it and against the boiler’s own cycling. In practice that means the second and third shots in a row behave much more like the first, and recovery between them is less of a wait. It’s also why the Silvia feels planted on the bench: at 14 kg it doesn’t slide when you lock in a portafilter with any force. The honest counterpoint is that mass has costs. The Anna heats up faster from cold, which matters a lot if you make one coffee on a weekday morning and want it now. It’s far easier to lift, move, and slide back into a cupboard between uses.
What’s worth understanding is that mass and PID are not doing the same job. The PID owns where the shot starts; thermal mass owns what happens during it and between shots — and as covered above, the controller can’t do much about the temperature drop once cold water is moving through a small boiler. So the Anna’s lighter build isn’t offset by its PID. Both machines have a temperature problem, and each solves a different half of it: the Anna nails the starting point and drifts more through the shot, the Silvia is vaguer about where it starts and holds far better once it’s going.
That’s the trade in one line. If you want a known number to begin from, that’s the Anna. If you want the machine to stay put once the pump is running and to be ready again straight away, that’s the Silvia.
Both machines are single boilers, and that means the same workflow on each: you brew, then you switch the machine over to steam, wait for the boiler to climb, and texture your milk. You cannot do both at once on either one. If simultaneous brew-and-steam is what you’re after, you’re looking at the wrong tier — that’s heat exchanger or dual boiler territory.
Between the two, the Silvia is the stronger steamer. Its commercial-style articulating wand delivers a firmer, drier steam and gives you more authority over the milk once you know what you’re doing — it’s the more capable tool and it will make better microfoam in trained hands.
The Anna’s articulating wand with a 2-hole tip is gentler, and for a beginner that’s an advantage rather than a compromise. Less aggressive steam gives you more time to react, which makes the learning curve for latte art noticeably kinder. Plenty of people find they get drinkable textured milk out of an Anna in the first week and are still fighting the Silvia in the third. Set your expectations sensibly for both: either machine will handle two or three milk drinks in a sitting comfortably. Neither is built for a dinner party, and pushing a 0.25–0.3 L boiler through eight cappuccinos in a row will frustrate you regardless of which badge is on the front.
The Rancilio Silvia has one of the strongest repair reputations of any home espresso machine ever made, and it’s deserved. The design is commercial-derived and deliberately simple: a brass boiler, a solenoid, a pump, a thermostat, a switch panel. There is very little to go wrong, everything that does go wrong is accessible, and parts are available everywhere because the machine has been in production in recognisably the same form for decades. We still see Silvias come through the workshop past their fifteenth birthday and go back out working properly.
The Anna is well built — AISI 304 stainless, a brass boiler, Lelit’s own group — but it’s a denser package in a lighter shell, and the PID board adds an electronic component the Silvia simply doesn’t have. That’s not a fault; it’s the trade you make for the starting-temperature control. Lelit parts supply in Australia is good and we hold what we need.
Both machines are serviced in our own Brisbane workshop. We’re an authorised stockist and service agent for Rancilio and for Lelit, so whichever you choose is supported here rather than freighted interstate to a third party. Running costs are broadly identical — descaling on the same schedule, backflushing on the same schedule, seals and shower screens at the same intervals. Neither is meaningfully cheaper to own.
It’s worth thinking about this as choosing a family rather than choosing a machine, because most people who get serious about espresso do upgrade eventually.
From the Silvia, the natural next step is the Silvia Pro X at around $3,200 — dual boilers, dual PID, and crucially it keeps Rancilio’s own 58 mm commercial group, so every basket, tamper and portafilter you bought for the Silvia carries straight across. Alternatively, the 58 mm ecosystem opens the whole heat-exchanger and dual-boiler market to you without replacing a single accessory.
From the Anna, the Lelit range steps up to the Mara X at around $2,699 — an E61 heat exchanger with PID-managed temperature that’s one of the best-regarded machines at its price — and on to the Bianca V3 at around $4,799 with dual boilers, a rotary pump and manual flow control. Both are 58 mm, which does mean 57 mm accessories don’t come with you.
Neither path is a dead end. But it’s fair to say the Silvia’s accessories travel further than the Anna’s do.
There’s no single winner here, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Choose the Lelit Anna if you want a known, repeatable starting temperature from the moment you unbox it, you’re working with limited bench space, you want a machine that’s quick from cold and easy to move, and you’d rather put your learning effort into milk than into timing. The pressure gauge and the softer steam wand both make it the friendlier machine for someone starting from zero.
Choose the Rancilio Silvia if you want the 58 mm commercial standard and everything that plugs into it, you value the mass that keeps shot two as good as shot one, and you want a machine you can realistically keep running for fifteen years or more with parts that will still exist. You accept that you’ll learn the temperature routine in exchange for a machine that holds its heat where it counts — under the pump.
And if you’re stuck, buy the one whose compromise you’d rather live with — because at $50 apart, that’s genuinely all this comes down to. Both are properly good machines. Neither will disappoint you if you pair it with a decent grinder, which at this tier matters more than the choice between these two ever will.

The Anna we sell — the PL41TEMD — has PID temperature control built in from the factory. It holds the boiler at a set temperature rather than letting a thermostat swing above and below it, so every shot starts from the same known number, which is most of what shot-to-shot consistency means for a home user. Be realistic about the limit, though: on a boiler this small the temperature still falls during extraction as cold tank water mixes with the hot water in the boiler. PID gives you a precise starting point and narrows the spread, not flat temperature control right through the shot — that’s what dual-boiler machines are for. Note also that the base Anna models sold elsewhere (PL41 and PL41EM) do not have PID, so check the model code when you’re comparing prices.
We generally steer people away from it. A retrofit kit means cutting into a machine whose great strength is its simplicity and repairability, and it complicates any future service work. If factory temperature control is what you want at this price, the Lelit Anna already has it. If you want PID and more capability, the Rancilio Silvia Pro X has dual boilers and dual PID built in. It’s not better espresso, but it is a better ecosystem. 58mm is the commercial standard, so precision baskets, tampers, distribution tools and WDT tools are all made for it and easy to find. The Anna’s 57mm Lelit group works perfectly well — you just have a smaller pool of accessories to choose from, and anything you buy for it won’t carry across if you later move to a 58mm machine.
The Anna, for most people starting out. It’s half the weight at 7.5kg against the Silvia’s 14kg, it heats up faster, it has a pressure gauge so you can see what’s happening, and the PID takes the guesswork out of where each shot starts. The Silvia asks more of you — you learn to time your shot around the heating cycle — but it rewards that with the thermal mass to hold temperature better through the shot and across back-to-back ones, and a build that shrugs off years of use.
