Why use a WDT tool?

Grinders throw coffee into the basket in uneven clumps. Tamping on top of that traps pockets of fast and slow flow, so water races through the gaps and under-extracts the rest. Stirring the dose with fine needles first removes the clumps, levels the bed and lets you tamp a flat, even puck.
